Two world-renowned musicians and WP Jazz Program Directors, bassist Rufus Reid and pianist Mulgrew Miller, lead this tribute to the late Martin Krivin, founder of The Jazz Room Series and of William Paterson’s Jazz Studies Program, who passed away in September. Reid led the WP Jazz Program for twenty years, and his career has expanded from his role as a first-call bassist and educator to becoming equally in demand as a jazz and Guggenheim-winning orchestral composer; Mulgrew Miller, current Jazz Studies Director, continues to be one of the world’s most influential piano performers and the jazz world is discovering his equal prowess as an educator. They will be joined by drummer Horacee Arnold, saxophonists Bob Keller and David Demsey, trombonist Tim Newman, and other special guests.

The convention of the International Society for Improvised Music, hosted by William Paterson this year, brings an array of stellar improvising musicians to our campus. Composer/bandleader Karl Berger is a modern music icon through the Woodstock Music Studio that he founded; he appears on this concert with the University of Michigan Creative Arts Ensemble. Vocalist Pyeng Threadgill and the rolling rhythms of her band bring her eclectic style described as “indie jazz meets Afro groove.” These special guests are sure to create a memorable concert combination.

Although they have been friends for years and recorded on each other’s albums, the new folk supergroup, Red Horse, is the first truly collaborative effort by Eliza, John and Lucy. Red Horse’s sparse instrumentation allows these three wonderful singers to carry the magic of great songwriting. Each of these legendary artists solos on classics first made famous by the other two members. Displaying their impressive talents, Red Horse shows why Eliza Gilkyson, John Gorka and Lucy Kaplansky are three of folk music’s most popular artists and why their music speaks to fans of all generations.

Since that time, he has gone on to win a host of Grammy Awards as a leader of his own band, and as a collaborator on project that transcend his Latin and jazz roots, including cellist Yo Yo Ma, . He is today as well known for his impressive classical compositions as for his virtuosic saxophone and clarinet artistry. He has been composer in residence at the Caramoor Festival and with the St. Lukes Chamber Orchestra. Today’s concert will feature D’Rivera’s compositions as well as his powerful woodwind playing.
