Carl Allen

Internationally respected drummer and William Paterson University alumnus Carl Allen '83 returns to his alma mater in a tribute to two of his mentors, drum legends Art Blakey and Elvin Jones, as part of the University’s fall 2019 Jazz Room Series on Sunday, November 10.

The concert will take place at 4:00 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing on campus. “Sittin’ In,” an informal jazz talk with the afternoon’s artist, will be held at 3:00 p.m. in the Shea 101 Recital Hall; the event is free to all Jazz Room ticket-holders. Sunday afternoon concerts begin with a performance by a William Paterson student Jazz ensemble.

Tickets are $15 for general public, $12 for the William Paterson community and seniors, $8 for non-William Paterson students and free for William Paterson students with ID. There will be an additional $3 charge per ticket on the day of the show.

Allen has already built a major career, having led his own bands and appeared with numerous influential jazz performers, beginning with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard a year before graduating from William Paterson. He has also collaborated with Michael and Randy Brecker, Benny Golson, J.J. Johnson, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Cyrus Chestnut, Benny Green, Billy Childs, and many others.

He continues a regular schedule of recording, touring and teaching. He is currently working as a sideman with Christian McBride and Inside Straight, Benny Golson, and many more, along with leading the Carl Allen Quartet and The Art of Elvin, a tribute band dedicated to his two drum influences, Art Blakey and Elvin Jones.

Launched in 1978, the Jazz Room is one of the largest and most prestigious college-sponsored jazz events in the country. Performers include renowned professionals who encompass the complete spectrum of jazz, as well as William Paterson’s own student ensembles. The series has won numerous grants from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for its innovative programming.

The Jazz Room at William Paterson University has been made possible, in part, by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
