In the Depth of Clouds – Gao Yun’s Comparative Lecture on Chinese and Western Art with a Live Demonstration of Chinese Painting

Invited by the Center for Chinese Art, the Department of Art, and the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at William Paterson University, renowned Chinese artist Gao Yun will visit William Paterson University from October 28 to 31, 2024, as part of the Center's Distinguished Artist Series. 

Gao Yun is a prominent contemporary Chinese painter and a graduate of the Chinese Painting program at Nanjing University of the Arts. He holds the title of a National First-Class Artist in China. Currently, he is an expert on the National Thematic Art Creation Committee under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, a distinguished professor at Nanjing University, a council member of the Chinese National Academy of Painting, and vice chairman of the Chinese Painting Committee. He also serves as President of the Jiangsu Province Chinese Painting Society. Gao Yun has held various prestigious roles, including Vice Director of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Culture, President and Editor-in-Chief of the Jiangsu Fine Arts Publishing House, and Director of the Jiangsu Art Museum. He has served as a judge for the National Fine Arts Exhibition from the 10th to the 14th sessions.

Known for his refined talent across various fields, including lianhuanhua (Chinese illustrated storybooks), traditional Chinese painting, and stamp design, Gao Yun's early career was marked by numerous national awards, solidifying his position as one of China's most representative artists. His notable work, "Luo Lun Taking the Imperial Examination," won first prize at the 6th National Fine Arts Exhibition and is hailed as a masterpiece of 20th-century Chinese baimiao (line-drawing) illustration.

Gao Yun’s adept mastery of line drawing has set a milestone in the Chinese illustrated storybooks art form, blending traditional techniques with his distinctive creative expression. His work reflects his ongoing pursuit of transcendent aesthetics, balancing tradition with innovation, and constantly pushing the boundaries in Chinese painting.
