MM in Music Education

The Master of Music in Music Education Concentration allows students to enrich pedagogical skills, undertake advanced research, bring musicianship skills to a higher level, and gain greater personal insight into the field of music education.

The concentration provides music educators with an increased understanding of the aesthetics of music coupled with a comprehensive knowledge of the historical, theoretical, and philosophical foundations upon which the profession is based.

Please note: GREs are not required for admission into this program. Licensure is not part of this MM degree. If seeking licensure, please contact Dr. Tom Fallace (COEgradadvisor@wpunj.edu) about the MAT (Master of Arts in Secondary Education) with music concentration.

Curriculum

The 30-credit Master of Music in Music Education includes:

  • Research Techniques
  • Foundations of Music Education
  • Music Education Technology
  • Analytical Techniques
  • Graduate Seminar / Final Project
  • Electives (including applied lessons and ensembles)

Summer 2026 | 12-week session, May 26–August 14
  • Applied Lessons – 12-week summer session, Face-to-face or online. Matriculated students only.
  • Foundations of Music Education – 4-week online asynchronous course, late May – mid June.
  • Research Techniques – 4-week online asynchronous course, mid June – mid July.
  • Introduction to Special Education and Specially Designed Instruction – 6-week online asynchronous courses, offered through WP College of Education across two session windows spanning May through August. Permit required from Dr. Karen Decker. Counts toward New Jersey TSD Endorsement.
  • Orff Schulwerk Levels 1, 2, or 3 – 2-week in-person intensive, August 3–14; register at NNJOSA.org; graduate credit requires enrollment in the Graduate Certificate in Music Education.
Fall 2026 | August 26 – December 12 (Register by August 6 to avoid a $150 late fee.)
  • Global Music Ensemble – Face-to-face, Evening TBD. Contact Dr. Payton MacDonald.
  • Graduate Seminar – Face-to-face, Wednesday afternoons
  • Applied Lessons and Ensembles – Face-to-face or online synchronous, schedule TBA
  • Orff Schulwerk Professional Development Workshops – Three Saturdays (dates TBD)
  • Introduction to Special Education and, Specially Designed Instruction – online asynchronous courses offered through WP College of Education. Permit required from Dr. Karen Decker. Counts toward New Jersey TSD Endorsement
  • Curriculum Design: Theory and Practice, and Supervision & Evaluation: Performance Appraisal – online asynchronous courses offered through the WP College of Education. Permit required from Dr. Heejung An. Counts toward New Jersey Supervisor Standard Certificate.

Admission Requirements

In addition to the University's general admission requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent from an accredited institution; cumulative GPA of 2.75 (4.0 scale)
  • Completed application
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Audition demonstrating excellence in music performance, music teaching, or conducting:
    • Classical performance: Submit an electronic recording via the online application or schedule a live audition with the Music Admissions office
    • Jazz performance: Submit an electronic recording via the online application
    • Music teaching or conducting: Submit a video-recorded audition via the online application

Certificate applicants require an undergraduate music degree or equivalent and a completed university graduate application.
