Inventions Trio featuring Bill Mays, Piano, Marvin Stamm, Trumpet, and Alisa Horn, Cello, to Perform in Jazz Room Series on Sunday, February 21


Inventions Trio, featuring the unusual instrumentation of piano, trumpet, and cello, will perform at William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ on Sunday, February 21. The concert will begin at 4 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on the campus. 

Prior to the concert, the group’s members will be the guests for “Sittin’ In,” an informal discussion about jazz, at 3 p.m. in room 101 of Shea Center.  Admission is free to all Jazz Room ticketholders.

Tickets are available in advance or on the day of the performance at $15 standard; $12 senior citizens, William Paterson faculty, staff and alumni; and $8 for non-William Paterson students. William Paterson students may attend free of charge.

The Inventions Trio brings together the talents of a gifted cellist and two renowned jazz master improvisers with classical training to perform fresh interpretations of classical and jazz themes as well as original works.

Pianist Bill Mays’ credits include performances with Gerry Mulligan, Sarah Vaughan, and Frank Zappa, among others. Trumpeter Marvin Stamm’s playing has included the big bands of Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, Thad Jones, and Bob Mintzer, and a first-call studio career with Wes Montgomery, Freddie Hubbard, Quincy Jones, and Michael Legrand. Cellist Alisa Horn adds a chamber music touch to the group, with credits including several Young Artist competition awards, and the position of principal cellist of the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra.

The Jazz Room Series will continue on Sunday, February 28 with George Cables performing with Jeff “Tain” Watts, James Genus, and Gary Bartz. On Sunday, March 7, Pete Escovedo will join the William Paterson Latin Jazz Ensemble directed by Chico Mendoza; and on Friday, April 23, Maria Schneider will be the guest conductor with the William Paterson University Jazz Orchestra.

Launched in 1978, The Jazz Room is one of the largest and most prestigious college-sponsored jazz events in the country. Performers include renowned professionals who encompass the complete spectrum of jazz, from practitioners of traditional jazz to avant-garde to bebop to swing to Afro-Latin jazz, as well as William Paterson’s own student ensembles. The series has won numerous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for its innovative programming.
