William Paterson University Celebrates Women’s History Month in March

Writing Women Back Into History is this year’s theme as William Paterson University celebrates Women’s History Month in March with lectures and performances that support the theme. All events listed are open to the public; most are free. Events scheduled include:

Tuesday, March 2

Opening Ceremony—The Honorable Camelia M. Valdes, Passaic County Prosecutor, will present a lecture in the University Commons, Ballroom C at 12:30 p.m. A reception will follow. Valdes, sworn into office in 2009, is the first Latina prosecutor in New Jersey, the first woman prosecutor in Passaic County, and the first lead prosecutor of Dominican ancestry in the U.S.

Trifles by Susan Glaspell, and Poof by Lynn Nottage, two one-act plays by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwrights, will be held in the Black Box Theater, Hunziker Hall. Tickets are $12 standard; $9 for students, William Paterson community and seniors. Performances on March 2-6 at 8 p.m.; March 5 at 11 a.m., and March 7 at 3 p.m.

 Thursday, March 4

A Daughter’s Touch, a talk about one woman’s journey through post-partum depression, by Sylvia Lasalandra-Frodella ’96, author and PPD awareness advocate will be held in the University Commons, Ballroom C at 12:30 p.m.

Tuesday, March 9 

The Vagina Monologues – By Eve Ensler. Benefit performances will be held as part of a world-wide campaign to end violence against women and girls. Proceeds go to the Strengthen Our Sisters Shelter, West Milford. Performances on Tuesday, March 9 at 12:30 and 7 p.m., and Wednesday, March 10 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 for WPUNJ students with ID; $12 for faculty, staff, and guests. Tickets will be sold at the door. Black Box Theater, Hunziker Hall.

Wednesday, March 10

Fashion Show:  Comfortable in Your Genes. A benefit to raise awareness about anorexia nervosa and eating disorders.  The event will be held in the University Commons, Ballroom C from 7 to 10 p.m. Funds will be donated to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Eating Disorders. Donations will be collected at the door.

Thursday, March 11

Human Wrong Walkathon Campaign. Students, faculty, and staff will walk on campus to raise awareness about sex trafficking and slavery around the world. Walk starts in Zanfino Plaza at 12:30 p.m. Funds raised will be donated to Nighlight, an international organization committed to addressing issues surrouding trafficking and prostitution. Donations will be collected at the event.

Lecture: “Famous Journeys Out of Domestic Violence and the Wonderful Places You’ll Go!!!” Donnalynn Scillieri, a survivor of domestic violence, will speak about her life which includes working as a trader on Wall Street as well as suffering as a victim of domestic abuse. The event will be held in the Cheng Library Auditorium at 2 p.m.  A reception will follow.

R.A.C.E. A musical celebration of women from around the world. The event will be held in the Multipurpose Room in the Machuga Student Center at 8 p.m.

Tuesday, March 23

"Math: A Life Journey," a lecture by Patricia Kenschaft at 3:30 p.m. in Science Hall Room 2064. She is professor emerita of mathematics at Montclair State University.

 Wednesday, March 24

Women’s History Month Closing Ceremony: The Red Dress Dinner. Fifth annual celebration to honor recipients of the Women of Vision Award, and student essay contest winners. Minimum donation for William Paterson students is $5; $25 for faculty, staff, and guests. Proceeds will be donated to the American Heart Association. University Commons, Ballrooms C, 5 to 7 p.m.

 Friday, March 26

Women’s Health and Fitness Night. A fun-filled evening to celebrate women’s health and fitness. Topics include sexual health, skin care, nutrition and stress management. Blood pressure screenings, cholesterol testing and fitness assessments available. The program, also open to men, will be held from 4 to 7 p.m.  in the Rec Center.  A “Zumba” class will be held at 5 p.m.

 Sunday, March 28

Women’s Hike: A hike to High Mountain Preserve, adjacent to campus. Beginner to moderate level hike. Meet at Rec Center at noon.

 Tuesday, March 30

Spirit of a Woman: A multimedia performance tells the stories of African American women and their contributions to social reform, the arts, women’s rights, politics and athletics. The event will be held in the Multipurpose Room in the Machuga Student Center at 12:30 p.m. A reception will follow.

"Careers in Women’s and Gender Studies," a panel discussion led by graduates of the University’s Women’s and Gender Studies Department who will speak about their careers and graduate school experiences. The program will be held in University Commons Room 209 at 7 p.m.

Women’s History Month events are sponsored by the Student Government Association, the Student Activities Programming Board, Latin@Connections, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Phi Epsilon International Sorority, Inc., Mu Sigma Upsilon, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, Organization of Latin American Students, Women in Science and Engineering, the Education Enrichment Center, the Department of  Women’s and Gender Studies, the Counseling, Health, and Wellness Center, Recreational Services, and the Women’s Center.
