President Kathleen Waldron and others ranging from local mayors to the University’s football team are helping to celebrate reading as they visit the University’s Child Development Center in March to read to the children enrolled there as part of the Read Across America program.
President Waldron read on March 2. Other invited guests who will read from popular children’s books include Domenick Stampone ’94, mayor of Haledon, who is scheduled to read on March 25 at 12:30 p.m.; Randy George,mayor of North Haledon, who will visit on March 7 at 12:30; and Rosanne Hansel, education program specialist, New Jersey Department of Education, will read on Thursday, March 3 at 10:30 a.m.
Campus readers include Candace Burns, dean, College of Education, who will read on March 21 at 2:30 p.m.; Janis Strasser, professor of elementary and early childhood education, will read on March 1 at 2:30; Nina Jemmott, associate vice president and dean, graduate studies and research, is scheduled to read on March 8 at 10:30; Yvonne Roux, librarian, will read on March 10 at 12:30; Karen Hilberg, associate director, recreational services, will read on March 9 at noon; and members of the Pioneer Football team will visit and read on March 9 at 1 p.m.
Read Across America is a program developed by the National Education Association to promote reading motivation and awareness. Research shows that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school.
The University’s Child Development Center is an integral part of the College of Education. In collaboration with the Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education it offers opportunities to faculty, staff, and students to conduct research. The Center is open to the children of students, faculty, staff and alumni.
