William Paterson University College of Education to Hold Diversity Conference on April 1

--David Kirkland, author and assistant professor of English education at New York University, to give keynote address

William Paterson University’s College of Education will present its Fourth Annual Diversity Conference, “Deconstructing and Reconstructing Schools and Curriculum to Affirm Multiple Individual Identities,” on Friday, April 1 from 8:45 a.m. to noon in the 1600 Valley Road Auditorium on the University’s campus in Wayne.

David Kirkland, assistant professor of English education at New York University, will give the keynote address at 9:15 a.m. Kirkland, who explores the intersections among urban youth culture, language and literacy, urban teacher preparation, and digital media, has received many awards for his work, including a 2009-10 Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship. Kirkland has written numerous articles for publications such as Teachers College Record, English Education, and Reading Research Quarterly, and is currently completing his fourth book, A Search Past Silence, to be published through Teachers College Press’s Language and Literacy Series. Kirkland holds a doctorate in language, literacy and urban education from Michigan State University.
