William Paterson University’s renowned Music Department will showcase the musical talents of its faculty and students, from jazz to classical, in a Collage Concert on Saturday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus.
Performers will include members of the University’s distinguished music faculty, including internationally renowned jazz pianist Mulgrew Miller, who will perform with the William Paterson Jazz Orchestra conducted by David Demsey, and critically acclaimed classical pianist Gary Kirkpatrick, who will perform Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the William Paterson University Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sandra Dackow. Appearing as a special guest will be New York Yankees great and jazz guitarist Bernie Williams, who will perform with the William Paterson Jazz Orchestra.
“The Collage Concert at William Paterson University combines the many facets of the music department into an extraordinary musical extravaganza, featuring faculty and student solos and ensembles of many styles and genres joining together to celebrate all that makes our music department special. Proceeds from this benefit concert will go to our scholarship fund,” says Carol Frierson-Campbell, professor of music and chair of the department.
Other performers will include Grammy-nominated bass-baritone Stephen Bryant, who will perform “Son lo spirito” from Boito's Mephistofele; he will also conduct the William Paterson University Choir in a performance of excerpts from Carmina Burana. Faculty members Karen Demsey, flute, and Payton Mac Donald, percussion, will present a duo performance. Rounding out the program will be performances by a number of student groups, including the William Paterson University Percussion Ensemble and the William Paterson University Brass Ensemble.
Tickets for the concert are $25, $20 for senior citizens and members of the William Paterson University community, and $10 for students. A special VIP package that includes a ticket to the concert and a post-concert wine-tasting reception is $75.
