More than one hundred undergraduate students from several different science disciplines and 17 colleges and universities are registered for the Fifth Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium to be held on Saturday, April 16 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the University Commons Ballroom at William Paterson University.
The event, sponsored by the University’s College of Science and Health, includes 27 William Paterson students from the fields of biology and chemistry to present original research. The program, open to the campus community and students and mentors from other participating institutions, is divided into two sessions. The morning session, from 10 a.m. to noon, includes posters from the fields of behavior, ecology and evolution, physiology, and nanochemistry. A panel of judges comprised of University faculty will evaluate all entries.
Nicholas Kollias, distinguished research fellow, Johnson and Johnson, will present the plenary address, “Skin: An Organ Whose Study Requires the Intersection of Multiple Fields of Science,” from 1 to 2 p.m. The afternoon session, to be held from 2 to 4 p.m., includes posters from the disciplines of cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, general chemistry and material chemistry. An awards ceremony follows at 4:30 p.m.
“The symposium helps students find out where they’re going in terms of their careers,” says Jaishri Menon, professor of biology. “Participating in this event helps students transition to graduate school.”
“Undergraduate research allows students to expand the knowledge and problem solving skills developed during class in novel and innovative ways to explore the scientific world,” adds Jean Fuller-Stanley, associate dean of the College of Science and Health.
