More than fifty specialized and traditional summer camps designed specifically for high school and middle school students will be held on the campus of William Paterson University in Wayne during June, July and August.
William Paterson University’s Pre-College Programs, which run from July 11 to 29, help foster a successful transition to college for high school students. They can stay in the residence halls or commute, gaining a real taste of college life on campus. High school students may choose to live on campus in a residence hall or commute. Residential students will have the opportunity to participate in evening activities including swimming in the University’s competition-sized pool, and use of the sports equipment in the Rec Center.
High school students can choose from more than forty pre-college programs in science, music, art, communication, business, education, English and foreign languages, and humanities and social sciences. “We offer a great opportunity for students to sample potential college majors and explore future career possibilities, guided by professors and experts in a wide range of fields,” says Bernadette Tiernan, executive director of continuing and professional education.
New Pre-College Programs highlights this summer include science courses in geology, physics, and aquatic, plant and microbial ecology; programs in acting and video production, stage and screen script-writing, academic writing for college, guitar in classical, jazz and rock, and public speaking and debate; technology-focused courses such as computer game design and programming, web design and flash animation, and computer forensics; and business workshops in investing, entrepreneurship, and persuasive communication and sales; The University will once again offer its 18th Annual Jazz Workshop, with classes in improvisation and arranging. The jazz workshop features world-renowned artists in nightly clinics and concerts and it also includes an evening at a legendary New York jazz club.
Middle school students can attend half-day sessions or may choose full-day camps. Among the 18 enrichment programs offered are Rock-In Summer, Digital Movie-Making, Drawing Marathon, Acting and Auditioning, CSI Law enforcement workshop and Robotics.These one-week commuter camps run from July 11 to August 12.
The Summer Life on Campus program, for students in grades 6 to 9 in September 2011, runs from June 27 through August 12. Students can opt to come up to five days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., for one to seven weeks. This program is offered in conjunction with the Wayne Community Program, and provides students the opportunity to participate in career-related workshops, organized recreational games, and swimming, among other activities. This program includes lunch, field trips, and before and after care.
