INFORMATION FOR
New works of art created by artists using virtual 3D graphics will be on view in an exhibition from October 24 through December 2, 2011 in the William Paterson University Galleries located in Ben Shahn Hall on campus. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. An opening reception will be held on Monday, October 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the University Galleries.
Titled “The Real-Fake,” the exhibition features works by 17 artists from across the United States, as well as Germany, Canada, and South Korea, who use 3D software to create a range of art forms, from the still image to animation, interactive works and installation. Curated by Michael Rees, associate professor of sculpture and digital media at William Paterson, along with Rachel Clarke, professor of art at California State University-Sacramento, and Claudia Hart, professor, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, it presents the approaches employed by artists exploring artificial xyz space, the non-referenced synthetic image or object, and the specific qualities of the virtual camera that records it.
According to Rees, all of the artists place 3D within an avant-garde lexicon. Co-curator Hart asserts that “like their predecessors, video artists who adapted TV technologies for artistic use, these artists have adopted the technology employed in 3D shooter games and feature-length Hollywood animation blockbusters, but reject entertainment industry aesthetics and content, instead applying the medium to the trajectory of art history,” he says.
In addition to Rees, Clarke, and Hart, artists included in the exhibition are Kari Altmann, Jose Carlos Casado, Spencer Hutchinson, Yael Kanarek, Brian Khek, Alex Lee, Lenox-Lenox, Alex McLeod, Jon Rafman, Lou Regele, Timur Si-Qin, Yemendwed, Katria Zimmerman, and Zeitguised.
In conjunction with “The Real-Fake,” the University Galleries presents “Really Fake,” an exhibition of augmented reality site-specific installations throughout the William Paterson University campus. Augmented reality is an experimental technology where viewers can see objects in a real-world setting using their phone camera as a viewer. “Really Fake” places 11 different site-specific sculptures on the University campus; viewers will go on a kind of treasure hunt to experience the artworks. This exhibition has been curated by Michael Rees, associate professor of art, and Chris Manzione, a 2006 graduate of William Paterson. A list of participating artists and artwork locations can be accessed at http://bit.ly/ReallyFake_exhibition. A panel discussion will be held on Thursday, November 17, at 12:30 p.m. in Ben Shahn Hall, Room 146.
The exhibit is one of two on view concurrently in the William Paterson University Galleries. “Chinese Drawings from the Collection of the China Central Academy of fine Arts,” an exhibition of 100 Chinese drawings from 1950 to the present, is on view in the Court and East Galleries.
This exhibition is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
The William Paterson University Galleries are wheelchair-accessible. Large-print handouts are available. For additional information, please call the University Galleries at 973-720-2654.
