INFORMATION FOR
Helping children to understand and cope with events beyond their control is the topic of a workshop co-sponsored by William Paterson University and St. Joseph’s Healthcare System to be held on November 8.
“Enabling Children to Navigate in an Unpredictable World,” is one of a series of workshops designed for teachers, school nurses and guidance counselors. The program will be held in the University’s 1600 Valley Road building from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Admission is $20.
Presenters are Bindu Khanna, M.D., child and adolescent psychiatrist, St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center/St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, and James Pruden, M.D., director of EMS, emergency preparedness and telemedicine, St. Joseph’s Healthcare System.
Children today are continuously exposed to reports of natural disasters, violence on television, or witness it in their own communities. In order to help them cope, Pruden and Khanna will describe ways to help children prepare for and protect themselves during specific disasters, and suggest ways to enable them to cope with the fear and confusion surrounding stressful events. They will also discuss how to explain scary situations, using age-appropriate words and concepts and offer strategies for school staff to help children manage traumatic events.
This workshop is one of a series of workshops offered through St. Joseph’s and William Paterson University, “It’s All About the Kids” Children’s Health Series. Pre-registration is required; 1.5 contact hours are offered for this workshop.
