Red Horse, a supergroup of legendary folk artists featuring Eliza Gilkyson, John Gorka and Lucy Kaplansky, will perform at William Paterson University in Wayne on Saturday, March 10 at 8 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus.
The longtime friends have recorded on each other’s albums multiple times but Red Horse is their first truly collaborative effort. Red Horse’s sparse instrumentation allows these three acclaimed singers to carry on the tradition of folk music songwriting. Each of these artists performs solos on classics first made famous by the other two members.
Gorka, a native of New Jersey, has recorded numerous successful albums and was recognized by Rolling Stone as “the preeminent male singer/songwriter of the new folk movement.” Kaplansky has toured throughout the U.S. and Europe and continues to release hit records. Gilkyson, a Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, activist and daughter of legendary songwriter Terry Gilkyson, is known for her insightful storytelling and politically relevant songs. She has appeared on National Public Radio, XM Radio and Air America Radio and has toured worldwide.
The event is part of William Paterson’s Vistas Series, designed to serve the University’s students and faculty, as well as the surrounding multicultural community. Funding for the Vistas Series at William Paterson University has been made possible, in part, by a grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State.
