Johnny Ventura, who is known as “the father of modern merengue,” will perform at William Paterson University in Wayne on Saturday, March 31 at 8 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus. His performance is presented in conjunction with the University’s 2012 Cross-Cultural Arts Festival: Latin America and the Caribbean.
Ventura has performed all over the world and has an artistic life that spans more than five decades. His repertoire includes 28 gold records, two platinum albums, a Latin Grammy in 2004 and a Grammy of Excellence in 2006. He has received the highest honors from his native Dominican Republic and countries throughout the western hemisphere. The Dominican Congress named Ventura “Merengue Artist of the Century” and President Jimmy Carter made Ventura the first Dominican artist to be invited to a United States Presidential Inauguration.
The performance is part of William Paterson’s Vistas Series, designed to serve the University’s students and faculty, as well as the surrounding multicultural community. Funding for the Vistas Series at William Paterson University has been made possible, in part, by a grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State.
