William Paterson students Christina Nicastro won first place for junior women and José Martinez won second place for sophomore men at the 34th Annual New Jersey National Association of Teachers Singing (NATS) Auditions held on February 18, 2012 at New Jersey City University.
Other students who competed were Hilliary McCrink, Meagan McCarroll, Iliya Roitman, Malden Comanda and Barbara Bailey. Students were required to perform a repertoire of no more than twelve minutes consisting of songs in foreign languages and English.
NATS is the largest professional association of teachers of singing in the world with more than 7,000 members in the United States and more than 25 countries. Founded in 1944, NATS has been driven to encourage the highest standards of the vocal art and promote vocal education and research.
